Russian Far East aquaculture among leaders in terms of growth rates / November 20, 2018 09:00

Provisional figures indicate that in January-September 2018 Russia produced 149,500 metric tons of commodity farmed fish, up by 6% as compared to the corresponding result of last year, according to Russia’s Federal Agency for Fisheries (FAF).

Traditionally the main contribution was made by the companies of the nation's South federal district. Through the first nine months of the year they farmed 52,100 metric tons (1.7% up on 2017) of finfish and other aquatic species. Companies based in the Russian northwest contributed 44,500 tonnes (plus 2%). And those located in the central Russia added up 16,000 tonnes (+8.1%) to the nation’s total output of farmed fish.

Three leading regions in terms of growth rates were the Urals federal region with the result of 40% up (5,800 tonnes), the North Caucasis - 25% up (9,800 tonnes) and the Far East federal district – 21.4% up (11,000 tonnes).

Actually, the main volumes of commodity farmed fish are produced in the fourth quarter of the year. In 2017 the aquaculture production in Russia rose by 7% to 220,000 tonnes. The draft of the nation’s strategy for the fishery industry development provides for a triple increase of commodity fish farming by 2030 – at least up to 600,000 metric tons.
