In the first seven months of 2010, Vietnamese seafood export to Russia increased 13%, but has not reached the target, reports www.megafishnet.com with reference to VASEP.

This was due to catches in 2009 in Russia well. According to statistics of Russia, catches doubled compared to 2008. Thus price of fresh fish was half of Vietnamese fish price. Not only Vietnamese seafood but also products from other exporters into Russia faced difficulties in the first months of 2010. These difficulties influenced Vietnam's seafood export to Russia from September 2009 to the end of April 2010.

In the last 18 months, all Vietnamese seafood enterprises have complied with regulations on quality and food safety and hygiene when exporting to Russia. Since Steering Board of pangasius export to Russia was found, commitments on quality control have been fully performed by enterprises.

Vietnamese exporters have taken some advantages to export to Russia. In the first seven months of 2010, there were decrease in price of seafood exported to such leading markets as the U.S. and EU at the average of 5-10%. Meanwhile, price of pangasius sold in Russia market has been risen at 0.07 USD/kg on average.

In order to reach the target of 100 million USD for seafood exported to Russia, enterprises should diversify their exported categories from processed fillet pangasius to others like surimi or frozen shrimp.
