Highly productive salmon population cultured in Magadan

October 10, 2011 16:22

Highly productive salmon population with a strong return rate has been cultured by Magadan breeders after several years of reproduction activities, reports http://www.megafishnet.com/.

More specifically, the return rate of up to 1.87% from released fry which has been recorded for Magadan salmon is regarded fairly strong by world salmon breeders. Such rate means that the biomass of salmon spawners may reach 60-70 MT of salmon from 1 million young salmons. Salmon spawners running to the native grounds may be used both for reproduction and commercial purposes.

At present, the average annual rate for return of cultured chum salmon released in the River Kulkuta amounts to ca.0.7%, which should be regarded as a good result taking into account severe climatic conditions of Russia's Far North.
