Russian seafood imports from China surging at stunning pace

November 23, 2006 16:27
In the first three quarters of the current year 2006 Russian importers have increased their seafood purchases from China and the largest rise of as much as 16587,60% in value and 11713,60% in volume among selected import items has been observed for sea scallops, according to FISHNET analysts who have scrutinized provisional data of Russia's Federal Custom Service.

The development is in keeping with the current trend of China's strengthening positions on the Russian seafood market. The Chinese factories are swallowing increasing volumes of Russian raw material to send back whitefish fillets and other finished products. In particular, latest reports claim that Chinese seafood giant Pacific Andes has taken over a number of Russian APO quota holders to feed the growing appetite of its factories while the firm's processing capacity is being boosted by another huge land-based plant in the process of construction.

The second largest increase of 437,63% in value and 316,67% in volume of Chinese shipments to Russia in the first three quarters of 2006 as compared to the same period last year has been recorded for frozen fillets of ocean perch (Sebastes sрр.).

Chinese producers have also made a further boost to their supplies of frozen fillets of Alaska pollock (Theragra chalcogramma).

The rising trend for APO fillet supplies from China can be viewed in the graphs as below.

The only drop both in terms of volume and value of seafood imported to Russia from China has been observed for prepared packed shrimps falling by 66,88% and 54,33% correspondingly.
