Russian red king crab fishery going ahead on big quota remainder in the Barents Sea

October 19, 2006 00:00

On 15 October 2006 Murmansk crabbers have at long last appeared in daily vessel reports to confirm actual start of the autumn-winter red king crab season in the Barents Sea.

Though the season was officially opened on 1st September the catch during the month was a mere 100 tonnes in test hauls to check the meat infill of the crab legs.

Now with the meat content improving, the Russians are starting mass fishery in the area of Murmansk Shallow at the depths of 250-300 meters with the rates expected on a par with October 2005.

According to provisional figures, the spring season ended with a catch of somewhat in excess of 3100 metric tons with the bulk of the quota still to be taken up.

In the last couple of years Murmansk-led North Basin has emerged as Russia’s major supplier of red king crab for the international markets.

This trend has consolidated with the Russian crab quota more than doubling in 2006 on the previous year.

The change in Russian quotas can be viewed in the table below.

In volume terms, the quota has jumped from 3431.36 tonnes in 2005 to 11,109 tonnes in 2006, the inshore and offshore allocations put together.

The quotas in Murmansk-led North Fisheries Basin are allocated as five year quota shares for 2004-2008 and the offshore and inshore quota holders in 2006-2005 are listed below.
