Russian quota distribution system to incorporate sustainability requirement

August 3, 2007 16:18

Russia's Federal Fisheries Agency in cooperation with ecologists have proposed that the current system of quota distribution should be amended proceeding not only from the existing historical principle (based on catch volumes in the previous years, the applicant's contribution to onshore infrastructure and its good tax record), but also from the fleet's economic efficiency and the company's ecological policy as regards sustainability.

Experts from the Wild World Fund think that the use of the above criteria will help not only minimize the damage to the stocks, protect the biological wealth of the seas for the succeeding generations, but it will finally encourage an increase of profitability of the Russian fishery industry.
