Russian fisheries in North Atlantic and Central Eastern Atlantic as per 2nd week 2010

January 19, 2010 09:06

The total harvest of Russian vessels in the North Atlantic and Central Eastern Atlantic from 8 to 15 January grew to ca.10,400 tonnes, thus displaying an increase by 5700 tonnes on the result of the first week of 2010, fishery sources in Murmansk told http://www.fishnet-russia.com/ (https://www.fishnet.ru/), with reference to provisional figures of National Centre for Fisheries Monitoring and Communication.

Share of fish harvested by vessels coming from Kaliningrad-led West Fisheries Basin amounted to 16%. The harvest jumped mostly thanks to larger fishing efforts and catches of spring-spawning herring in the Norwegian Sea in the waters of Lofoten (up to 5200 tonnes) and sardine in the Central Eastern Atlantic (up to 2500 tonnes).

In the Barents Sea most of the fleet was operating already in the northwest part of the Norwegian EEZ where large pre-spawning cod, haddock and saithe started concentrating in the vicinity of the spawning grounds. The total harvest in the second week of January 2010 in the Norwegian EEZ amounted to 2700 tonnes of cod (more than 70% of the total cod harvest in the Barents Sea), 260 tonnes of haddock and nearly 300 tonnes of saithe. The fishery results showed that the first three places in terms of catch volumes were taken by herring of the Norwegian Sea (5200 tonnes), Barents Sea cod (3700 tonnes) and sardine of the Mauritanian zone (2500 tonnes). The catch rates in the second week of 2010 differed from those in the same period of 2010 as follows:

  • in the Barents Sea the cod harvest grew by 1500 tonnes;
  • in the Norwegian Sea the herring fishery in early 2010 was conducted more actively (+3400 tonnes), but the blue whiting fishery was not conducted at all (for comparison, in 2009 the blue whiting harvest through the week amounted to 3500 tonnes);
  • in the Central Eastern Atlantic the structure of catches changed with sardine pushing mackerel away from the top first dominating species in the area.
