Russia signing new strategic design contract with Norwegian architects

April 12, 2010 15:35
In a period where new contracts are not that frequent, Skipsteknisk (naval architects based in Aalesund, Norway) has signed a contract for complete design of an ice-going fishery research vessel for the Federal Agency of Fisheries in Russia.  The contract includes two options and was signed with the Russian shipyard Dalzavod in Vladivostok. The design-work will start up immediately and includes both classification design and workshop drawings, reports http://www.megafishnet.com/ (https://www.fishnet.ru/) with reference to the company's official press-release.

The vessel is of ST-367 Arc design.  The designation indicates that the vessel will be built with high ice-class for operation in arctic waters in East-Russia. The vessel has a length of 74 m and is arranged for 45 persons including crew and scientists. The vessel will be equipped and outfitted in line with the most modern and efficient fishery research vessel built in the World today and also this vessel shall comply with the underwater noise requirement established by ICES(International Council for the Exploration of the Seas). Skipsteknisk has developed special knowledge within noise reduced research ships and the majority of research vessels built to this standard in the World are ST-designs. As a reference these criteria are comparable to those used for sub-marines.

In Skipsteknisk this contract is considered as a breakthrough in the Russian market. The company has worked in this market for many years but this contract is the first for a new-building to be built in Russia. Entering into a new market is expected to introduce new challenges but also new possibilities in one of the biggest countries in the World within fisheries.

Skipsteknisk will in this project co-operate with a Russian design office which will play a central role in the process of obtaining class- and authority approval, as well as development of workshop design.

The contract is a very important and strategic one for Skipsteknisk, and it is also signed at a time where the activity within the offshore segment has been reduced significantly.
