Russia has emerged as one of major suppliers of fishery products to Korea

In 2006 the Russian Federation was among the supplying countries accounting for over 82 percent of total Korean seafood imports on a value basis. In particular, the export from Russia to Republic of Korea has been steadily increasing since 2004, according to GAIN Report.

The Korean imports from Russia reached 225,892 tonnes in 2006 that is 14% more than in 2004 and 6.8% more than the year 2005 level.

In value terms the Korean imports of fishery products from Russia amounted to 25% in 2006 reaching USD 347,079,000 (for comparison, in 2005 the value of Korean imports amounted to USD 277,216,000 in the year 2004 - USD 276,783,000).

Russian export of fish, urchin roe and livers has increased by 66.3% up to 10,618 tonnes (in comparison with 6,383 tonnes in 2005).

The increase of export of whole flatfish from Russia has also been observed. In particular, in the year 2006 Russian traders exported 7,910 tonnes of flatfish that is 27% more in comparison with the amount of 2005 (6,209 tonnes).

In this situation, the export of whole groundfish species has declined to 155,009 tonnes in the year 2006 (for comparison, export of groundfish whole in 2005 amounted to 179,962 tonnes).
