Rosselkhoznadzor acts on cases of imported seafood contamination

June 5, 2007 16:20

In connection with the disclosure of bacteria of the colibacillus group and mesophilic aerobic and elective anaerobic microorganisms in pangasius portions (25 tonnes) and pangasius fillets (24 tonnes) coming to the Russian Federation from from the Vietnamese plants VN 152, VN 569 and DL-14 and Chinese plants 4600/02026 and 4400/02270, Russia's Federal Service for Veterinary and Phytosanitary Surveillance Rosselkhoznadzor has introduced temporary restrictions for seafood imports from the above mentioned plants.

Along with the above, a 19-tonne consignment of fishmeal coming from Denmark and a 360-tonne lot of fishmeal coming from Mauritania have produced positive results as containing cattle  DNA, while, under the Russian legislation, use of meat and bone meal in the diet of ruminant animals is not allowed due to the risk of bovine spongiform encephalopathy (BSE, also known as mad cow disease).

Due to the above discovery, Rosselkhoznadzor has also banned seafood shipments from the Danish plant FF Skagen and Mauritanian company Mine Shipping and Trading Co Ltd.
