Overview of Russian import of herring in 2009 and first quarter 2010
Total import volume of frozen herring, fillets, meat and other products in the first quarter 2010 to Russia amounted to 83,550 tonnes, 16.5% up on the same period 2009. Import value also increased, though to a smaller extent, namely by 2% from RUR2.106 billion to RUR2.151 billion.
Russian import in the first quarter 2010 rose practically from all directions. More specifically, import volume from Norway increased by 10% from 69,800 tonnes to 76,900 tonnes. Importation from the Great Britain jumped 7.9 times from 346 tonnes to 2,700 tonnes while import volume from Iceland escalated more than 24 times from 36 tonnes to 873 tonnes.
Finland, Latvia, Estonia and Sweden supplied mainly Baltic herring to Russia which is reported in statistics as "herring".
As for herring fillets, in the first quarter 2010 total import of this category amounted to 18,524 tonnes at a total value of RUR646,347,604. Major supplying countries were Norway with total volume of 17,021 tonnes (in comparison with 13,315 tonnes in the same period last year) and Iceland ranking the second with the volume of 1,503 tonnes (36 tonnes in the same period 2009).

In 2009 Russian import volume of whole herring practically did not change amounting to 170,985 tonnes in comparison with 171,826 tonnes in 2008.
Importation from the major supplier to Russia - Norway - in 2009 decreased and amounted to 152,212 tonnes against 156,095 tonnes in the year 2008.
Import from Iceland amounted to 5,933 tonnes against 3,577 tonnes in the year 2008. British supplies of the whole herring to Russia dropped to 3,315 tonnes in 2009 in comparison with 4,879 tonnes in the year 2008.
