Overview of freshfrozen fish market of Saint Petersburg and some other regions in mid-June 2007

The past month was marked by low herring inventories, high mackerel prices and some other developments on the market of St. Petersburg, Russia's main entry port for seafood, trading sources told RFR.

Below follow more details on particular species with average prices given as ex-coldstore VAT inclusive for quantities of between 1-10 metric tons unless specified otherwise.

Freshfrozen herring

In mid-June 2007 the Russian inventories of Norwegian herring 350+ and 400+ were practically zero and prices for the products grew to RUR43.00 and RUR48.00 per kilo correspondingly ex-coldstore Saint Petersburg. Herring from the last year harvest (February 2006) was offered from RUR27.50 per kilo ex-coldstore Saint Petersburg.

Poorly graded Russian herring 200-300 classified as large and fat was offered from RUR21.00-22.00 per kilo of fish both from old (January) and fresh (June) catch.

Mackerel

As per mid-June 2007 prices for mackerel reached the limit of the purchasing capacity.

Norwegian and Scottish mackerel was available from RUR63.00 per kilo of the size 400-600 ex-coldstore Saint Petersburg and from RUR86.00 for the size 500-600. There were also offers of Canadian mackerel 600+ from RUR109.00 per kilo.

Baltic herring, Baltic sprat

As per 18 June 2007, Estonian and Latvian fish was available from RUR15.50 per kilo on the market of Saint Petersburg.

Due to low inventories prices of the species are expected to grow by RUR1.00-1.50 per kilo.

Capelin

In mid-June 2007 situation on the capelin market stabilized and Icelandic capelin from the current year catch was available on the market of Saint Petersburg from RUR26.50 to RUR30.00 per kilo depending on the count. The counts available on the market ranged from 45/55 to 40/50 per kilo.

Blue whiting

By mid-June 2007 blue whiting prices stopped falling, and the fish packed in cartons 4 x 30 kilos was marketed from RUR12.50 FCA Saint Petersburg. In the coming weeks traders expected prices to grow as the fishing ships started to switch to herring and mackerel fishery.

Alaska pollock

Prices of Alaska pollock were stable from RUR40.00 per kilo ex-coldstore in Saint Petersburg depending on the size.

Pink salmon

Prices for high quality pink salmon grew to RUR66.00-70.00 per kilo ex-coldstore in Saint Petersburg.

Atlantic salmon and trout

As per 18 June 2007 prices for Atlantic salmon were slowly rising to peak at RUR230.00-235.00 per kilo of the size 6-7, 7-8. In the weeks to come traders were forecasting a further price growth by another RUR10.00 per kilo.
