Norwegian Salmon exports totalled NOK 2.5 billion in May

Figures from the Norwegian Seafood Export Council show the highest export value ever recorded for Norwegian Salmon in the month of May. Compared to the same month last year, the value of exports of Norwegian Salmon showed an increase of 26% or NOK 509 million, reports www.megafishnet.com with reference to NSEC.

"The strength of Norwegian Salmon exports is attributable to growth in demand combined with reduced competition in the world market for salmon," comments market analyst Paul Aandahl from the Norwegian Seafood Export Council.
Growth in both volume and price

In May, the total volume of Norwegian Salmon exports increased by 10% to 58,898 tonnes compared to May 2009. At the same time, the price of fresh whole Norwegian Salmon increased by 14% to NOK 39.91 per kg. This is the highest price for fresh Norwegian Salmon since June 2006, when the price reached NOK 41.54 per kg. Compared to April 2010, this is an increase of NOK 1.09 per kg.
Strong growth in exports to Russia

The value of exports of Norwegian Salmon to Russia increased by 51% in May to a total of NOK 183 million, while the volume of exports was up by 40% to 5,031 tonnes compared to the same period last year.
"Most of this growth is due to a corresponding reduction in supplies of Norwegian Fjord Trout," explains market analyst Paul Aandahl from the Norwegian Seafood Export Council. "The total volume of exports to Russia of Norwegian Salmon and Norwegian Fjord Trout combined increased by a more modest 2% in May compared to the same month last year."
85% growth in value of exports to USA

The strong growth in the value of exports to the USA is attributable to growth in exports of Norwegian Salmon fillets. In May, exports of fresh Norwegian Salmon fillets to the USA increased by 45% to 2,308 tonnes, and exports of frozen Norwegian Salmon fillets increased by 93% to 759 tonnes.
Norwegian Fjord Trout exports down

The value of exports of Norwegian Fjord Trout in May fell by 32% to NOK 100 million compared to the same month last year. The volume of exports totalled 2,361 tonnes, down by 2,099 tonnes or 47% from May 2009. The biggest export market for Norwegian Fjord Trout in May was Russia, with a value of NOK 54 million. This represents 53% of the total value of all exports of Norwegian Fjord Trout in May.
