MSC label for Whiskas and Sheba products

In a Europe-wide move, Mars Petcare has launched its first MSC-labelled cat food. As part of the company's commitment to use only fish from sustainable sources by 2020, a number of Whiskas and Sheba products in Germany, Switzerland and the Netherlands are already carrying the MSC label, with another 12 European countries to follow soon, reports www.megafishnet.com with reference to MSC.

The blue MSC logo on the pack will make it quick and easy for consumers to choose cat food from a certified sustainable fishery.

"The fish that Mars Petcare is using for these products comes exclusively from sources certified through the MSC standard", Rolf Zepp, Corporate Affairs Manager at Mars Petcare in Germany. "This certification is obligatory for all suppliers and contractors along the supply chain. Every single production site had to be specifically audited for this. This was by all means a big challenge because of the widely diversified structures based on the division of labor", as Zepp highlighted.

In an industry first, the Mars Incorporated's Petcare business announced its commitment to using only sustainably sourced fish by 2020. With this in mind, Mars Petcare is making plans to continue adding more varieties to its product range with fish from sustainable sources.
