Minister Shea Announces Appointment to the International Council for the Exploration of the Sea

OTTAWA - The Honourable Gail Shea, Minister of Fisheries and Oceans, today announced the appointment of Dr. Sylvain Paradis to the International Council for the Exploration of the Sea, reports www.megafishnet.com with reference to Fisheries and Oceans Canada.

"I am very pleased that Dr. Paradis accepted this position," said Minister Shea. "I would like to congratulate him. His wealth of knowledge and experience in fisheries research makes him an excellent choice for the position."

Dr. Paradis will replace Mr. Serge Labonté on the Council, as Mr. Labonté has retired. "I would like to thank Mr. Labonté upon his retirement for the dedication and hard work he has shown while in this position," added Minister Shea. Dr. Paradis will join Dr. Michael Sinclair as the two Canadian delegates appointed from Fisheries and Oceans Canada to the Council.
 
The International Council for the Exploration of the Sea is made up of 20 countries, including Denmark, Iceland, Norway, Portugal, Spain, United Kingdom, Russia, and United States. The Council encourages and coordinates marine environment and fisheries-related research, with a focus on the North Atlantic Ocean. The Council serves as a scientific advisory body upon request to member governments or international regulatory bodies that manage the North Atlantic Ocean and adjacent seas.

Dr. Paradis is the Director General of Ecosystem Science at Fisheries and Oceans Canada, where he is responsible for a variety of fisheries research files.
