Analysts of Vostokgosplan have compared the regions of the Russian Far East as to the efficiency of their seafood exports in 2019 in terms of volume, value and price. The conclusions were made public by the Ministry of Development of the Far East based on the research paper "Parameters of foreign trade turnover of fish products in the Far Eastern Federal district: volume, structure and value of exports", reports Megafishnet.com.

Primorsky Krai province

Thus, the largest exporter in the far Eastern Federal district in 2019 was Vladivostok-led Primorsky Krai province, which provided 47.5% of the physical volume and 40% of the export value.

"Primorsky Krai has the largest range of export products, which includes 20 commodity items. For certain types of goods, the region provides half or more of all supplies from the Far Eastern Federal district, in particular, 50% of exports of "dried, salted and smoked fish" and 70% of shellfish and fish fillets, " experts say.

In their opinion, the leading position of the Primorsky territory is growing due to an increase in the volume of shpments at a relatively low prices, this also applies to delicatessen products. "Competitive advantages of the region, allowing to hold the lead in the export of aquatic biological resources, are: a favourable geographical position (the shortest distance to markets in the Asia Pacific region), the conditions for capture (production) of a wide spectrum of exported species, including shellfish and invertebrates that are not widespread in the Russian Far East, as well as the most developed infrastructure, allowing the region to realize greater efficiency in logistics operations in transit of products both in Russia and abroad".

Kamchatka

The second and third places in terms of exports from the Far Eastern Federal district are occupied by two regions with similar export volumes – the Kamchatka territory and the Sakhalin region.

Thus, the Kamchatka territory provided 19.5% of the physical and 23.1% of the value volume of exports of aquatic bioresources from the Far Eastern Federal district in 2019. "The region has a wide range of export products, which consists of 16 commodity items", - experts explain"Vostokgosplan".

According to their observations, the peculiarity of the Kamchatka territory's exports is the highest price for most (9 units) types of products. So the price of crab is 41% higher than the average for the macroregion, for salmon-by 25%. "In 2015-2019, the physical volume of shipments from the Kamchatka territory increased by 25%; the value increased by 57%; the price increased by 25%," the experts concluded.

The main competitive advantage of the Kamchatka territory is the territorial proximity to the fishing grounds of the most valuable crab and fish species in terms of taste.

Sakhalin

In 2019, the Sakhalin region provided 19.5% of the physical volume and 23.1% of the value of exports of seafood, sharing the second and third places in the macroregion with the Kamchatka territory. By weight, the volume of exports from the region in 2019 amounted to 47.1% of the catch and production of the aquatic bioresources.

"This region has a wide range of export products, including 19 commodity items. It does not supply dried, salted and smoked fish, " analysts explain. However, for certain product groups, the Sakhalin region provides the maximum volume of supplies in the macroregion, in particular: 82% of the total physical volume of sea urchins and 36% of crabs.

A special feature of the Sakhalin region's exports is the high price of finished and canned products made from fish and seafood. "In 2015-2019, the physical volume of shipments from the Sakhalin region decreased by 1.6%; the value increased by 33.8%; the price increased by 36%," analysts say.

Khabarovsk

Khabarovsk Krai was not included in the top three of the region's fishery exports, however, in 2019, achieved 11% volume and 10% of export value of aquatic bioresources of the Far Eastern Federal district, occupying the fourth place in the macroregion. "By weight, the volume of exports in 2019 amounted to 42% of the catch and production of aquatic bioresources," experts note in the report. The region has a wide range of export products, which includes 18 commodity items. Sea urchins, however, are not supplied from the Khabarovsk territory.

Khabarovsk Krai is special in the Far Eastern Federal district for minimum prices for the low end products (18% lower than the average price in the District), and for the dried, salted and smoked fish the price is lower by 30% on the average). In 2015-2019, there was an increase in the physical volume of shipments - by 26%; value - by 68%; prices-by 33%, - analysts explained.

Magadan

The fifth place was taken by the Magadan region. In 2019, the region provided 2.3% of the physical volume and 3.5% of the value of the total export of water bioresources from the Far Eastern Federal district. "By weight, the volume of exports in 2019 amounted to 36.2% of the catch and production of aquatic bioresources," the experts found.

The region exports a non-wide range of products, consisting of 11 commodity items. "So from the Magadan region, there were no shipments of fresh and chilled fish, salted, dried and smoked fish," other frozen fish", sea bass, halibut, all types of aquatic invertebrates, sea scallops, ready - made and canned fish and seafood, " experts say.

According to their data, the export features high proportion of products of the low price segment "for 2015-2019, the physical volume of shipments decreased by 3.7%; the value increased by 70%; the price increased by 77%".

The region displayed the lowest export volume of goods of the average price group (1.2 thousand tons, which is less than 3% of the weight of the region's exports). At the same time, prices for certain types of goods in this group are the highest. For example, for "cuttlefish, squid and octopus" they are 4.3 times higher than the average for the far Eastern Federal district.

According to experts, the contribution of the other territories of the Far Eastern Federal district to the structure of water bioresources export is insignificant.
