VENUS DUE HOME ON WHITSUN WEEKEND

May 21, 2015 09:00

HB Grandi’s magnificent new pelagic vessel Venus NS was in a position of the north-west coast of Portugal at midday today. The delivery trip from the yard in Turkey has gone well in spite of poor weather and the ship is expected to dock at its home port of Vopnafjördur next Monday.

‘We have 1430 nautical miles to go to reach Vopnafjördur and the ship has performed perfectly on the way. We had a twelve-hour spell of bad weather coming through the Mediterranean off the coast of Algeria  but we passed through the Straits of Gibraltar in good weather on Monday. Then we hit a storm off the southern tip of Portugal with northerly weather and still made progress despite the conditions. The ship felt the weather but the crew didn’t get damp,”’ skipper Gudlaugur Jónsson said.

A direct course has now been set for Vopnafjördur, passing west of Ireland and the seven-man crew won’t have a sight of land until the south-east coast of Iceland appears on the horizon.
