Russia’s Government approved new strategy for combating illegal trade in industrial products

Russia’s Government approved a new Strategy for Combating Illegal Trade in Industrial Products in the Russian Federation for the period up to 2025 (Decree No. 256 of February 6, 2021). The previous strategy was valid for the period up to 2020, reports Megafishnet.com.

According to the Government, the recent document defines industrial products as goods that are produced by the manufacturing industry, including fish processing. It is planned to protect the market from counterfeit and falsified goods by means of:

  • improving national legislation (including toughening responsibility for the production, storage, transportation and sale of such products),
  • coordinating the efforts of the authorities, public associations and the business community,
  • harmonizing the legislation of the EAEU member States in this area,
  • developing international cooperation,
  • developing and implementing a comprehensive state system for monitoring the situation in the field of combating illegal turnover of industrial products.

This is especially up-to-date in connection with the increased falsification of fish products, in particular, misnaming salmon species. Unscrupulous producers label the product under the name of a more expensive salmon species, though it is made of cheaper salmon fish.

It is also worth noticing that on June 26, 2020, the EAEU Technical Regulation "Food Products in terms of their labeling" came into full force and currently producers are obliged to inform customers regardless of the percentage of genetically modified components in the products.
