Importation of mackerel by product forms into Russian Federation in 2006 - 2007

June 26, 2008 17:10

Russian import of mackerel in 2004 - 2006 declined steadily. The growth of import volume started in 2007 but could not completely recover to the level of 2004. The reason behind the import decline was the rapid growth of prices resulting into resistance of importers to buy expensive products. In 2007 the import volume increased, mostly due to stop of rash prices growth. This was concluded by http://www.fishnet-russia.com/ (https://www.fishnet.ru/) specialists after investigations of the official data of Russia's Federal Customs Service of importation of products of the group 03 "Fish and shellfish, mollusks and other invertebrates" HSC.

From 2004 - 2007 the average import price of mackerel on the Russian market increased more than twofold, from USD 0.8 per kilo to USD 1.74 per kilo. The most noticeable price hike of 56% was observed in 2006, for comparison in 2007 the prices increased by 5% only.

Importation of mackerel HSC 0303743000, 0303749000 - (Scomber scombrus, Scomber australasicus, Scomber jaрonicus), frozen, excluding liver, roe and milt into the Russian Federation in 2007

The table has been compiled on the basis of Russia's Federal Customs Service data

2007

In 2007 the Russian market of mackerel started recovering. The import of mackerel into Russia in 2007 dramatically jumped by 55% and reached 83,567 tonnes (for comparison 53,881 tonnes in the previous year). The import value surged by 63% from USD 89 million to USD145 million. The average import price increased by 5% only, from USD 1.65 to USD 1.74/kg.

In 2007 the import of W/R mackerel increased by 62% (from 46,597 tonnes in the year before to 75,592 tonnes). The import volume of HGT mackerel in 2007 amounted to 7975 tonnes, up 10% from the year 2006 level of 7283 tonnes.

Import volume of products for human consumption also increased by 60% reaching 80,303 tonnes (for comparison, 50,243 tonnes in 2006). At the same time, import of products for factory processing and canning decreased by 11% from 3637 tonnes in 2006 to 3264 tonnes in 2007.

Great Britain

Great Britain being the largest supplier of mackerel to Russian Federation restored the volumes of its supplies which had declined for 2 years period before that.

The import volume of products from Great Britain soared by 87% to 44,504 tonnes in comparison with 23,748 tonnes in 2006. The import value increased by 96%, from USD38.6 million to USD75.6 million. The average price increased by 5% (from USD 1.62 per kilo to USD1.70 per kilo. Thanks to such leap of sales the share of Great Britain on the Russian market increased from 43% to 53%. In 2007 Great Britain supplied into the Russian Federation both W/R mackerel and HGT for human consumption.

The import volume of W/R mackerel in 2007 amounted to 42,253 tonnes, up more than twice from the year 2006 level (21,114 tonnes). Import of HGT mackerel in 2007 conversely decreased twofold coming down to 1,252 tonnes (for comparison 2,609 tonnes in 2006).

The import of mackerel from the Great Britain into the Russian Federation was carried out directly.

Norway

Unlike the Great Britain, Norway, being the second largest producer of mackerel, decreased its share from 37% to 19%. This happened due to decreasing of import of Norwegian mackerel by 22% (from 20,670 tonnes to 16,106 tonnes) into the Russian Federation, despite the growth of mackerel catch in Norway in 2007. The import value decreased by 19% from USD 33.6 million to USD27.2 million, at the same time the average price increased by 4%, from USD1.63 to USD1.69 per kilo. In 2007 the mackerel from Norway were supplied into the territory of the Russian Federation in the form of W/R product for human consumption.

The volume of W/R mackerel supplied to Russia in 2007 amounted to 16,106 tonnes, down more than 14% from the level of 18,589 tonnes in 2006. The HGT mackerel was not imported in the Russian Federation in 2007, unlike in 2006 when the import volume of HGT mackerel from Norway amounted to 1,101 tonnes.

All the products from Norway were exported into Russian market directly.

Mauritania

Mauritania was the third largest supplier to Russia in 2007. The export to Russia from Mauritania increased by 130% to 7051 tonnes in comparison with 3,064 tonnes in 2006.

The products from Mauritania were imported into the territory of the Russian Federation both directly and via such countries as Germany, Latvia, Morocco, Panama, Great Britain and the USA.

Ireland

Notably, the supplies of W/R mackerel from Ireland soared almost 6 times, from 800 tonnes to 5,559 tonnes, thanks to low price of products (USD1.54 per kilo) down 14% from the level of USD1.79 per kilo in 2006.

The main part of the volume of W/R mackerel from Ireland (5,488 tonnes) were supplied for human consumption.

In 2006 the import volume of this product category amounted 800 tonnes only.

The import of products for processing in 2007 amounted to 71 tonnes only.
