Import substitution gathering momentum on Russian seafood market

June 3, 2011 11:10
Russia's Federal State Statistics Service published detailed information on the nation's social-economic condition in January-April 2011, including seafood production indices, according to Russian Fish Insider Report published by http://www.megafishnet.com/.

According to the report, in the first four months of 2011 seafood production in Russia, canned fish inclusive, amounted to 1,313,000 metric tons thus displaying a rise of 6.5% or 80,000 tonnes on the same period of last year. The rise was mostly contributed by fish fillets and ready-to-eat products.

Analytics say that the market share of domestic fish products on the national market has increased and the process of import substitution therefore has been gathering momentum, partly pushed by the recent amendments in the hygiene legislation as to glazing standards for seafood products.
