Government of Canada Creates Jobs and Invests in Cornwall's Harbour Facility

Guy Lauzon, Member of Parliament for Stormont-Dundas-South Glengarry, announced today on behalf of the Honourable Gail Shea, Minister of Fisheries and Oceans that the Government of Canada is providing $1.5 million for repairs and improvements to the harbour facility in Cornwall, Ontario, reports www.megafishnet.com with reference to Fisheries and Oceans Canada.

"Our Government is focused on improving harbours in communities all across the country, because they positively impact and support economic development," said Mr. Lauzon. "By funding harbour repairs and improvements, we are creating jobs and investing in Cornwall's future."

The project includes the reconstruction of the existing walkway along the north side of the harbour, complete with a new retaining wall, floating docks and a sloping rock rubble shoreline.  Along the east walkway, construction includes a new concrete retaining wall and deck surface.  In addition, electrical and water services are being upgraded and new access walkways installed. Construction is scheduled to be completed by June 2010.

This project is being undertaken by Fisheries and Oceans Canada, Small Craft Harbours Program, in collaboration with the City of Cornwall, which manages and operates the facility for the benefit of local users. This funding is part of the Government of Canada's $80 million in regular funding for the Small Craft Harbours Program this year, which is in addition to the $200 million provided for small craft harbours under Canada's Economic Action Plan.
