VENUS FISHING WELL ON MACKEREL

July 29, 2015 10:07

Venus NS is expected to dock this evening or tonight at Vopnafjördur with around 650 tonnes of mackerel on board, caught in four hauls south east of Hvalbak.

‘There seems to be a decent amount of mackerel there and not many ships fishing in the area. We were fishing in much the same area in the previous trip and had 500 tonnes that included some Atlanto-Scandian herring in the last tow when we went deeper than in the previous tows,’ said skipper Gudlaugur Jónsson.

Two Hampidjan staff, responsible for fishing gear development and for sales and marketing of trawls, doors and other fishing gear, were also on board for this trip. The aim was to film some undersea footage of how mackerel react to the fishing gear and he said that the filming was successful.

‘There’s no question that undersea filming like this is of great value to skippers and mates. We can learn from this and the Hampidjan team were happy with the results,’ he said.
