Russian fleets winding up herring fishery in Faroese Zone and other areas

December 7, 2020 20:17

The autumn herring fishery traditionally begins in late September and ends in late November. As per the end of November 2020, all the current quotas have been nearly covered with part of the catch shipped for export. The next fishery will only occur in October 2021, reports Megafishnet.com.

According to Russia’s major importer DEFA Group, the fishing season 2020 can be called a success in general. The fish caught in the waters of the Faroese Islands has a fairly good average size of 350+ and more. Prices for such herring size make it more profitable for the seller to bring the product to the European market, since on the Russian market there is a similar product - the same sized herring caught in the Atlantic basin.

Moreover, many suppliers have unsold inventories of herring caught in November last year. The most popular size of the Faroese herring on the Russian market is 380-400 +, it enjoys a strong demand each and every year.

Along with the herring fishery in the Faroese waters, the herring fishery is also coming to a close in the Russian Atlantic with only small quotas remaining uncovered.

The herring fishery is still ongoing in the Russian Far East, with a large volume of herring being exported to China.
