The Federal Agency for Fishery (Rosrybolovstvo) has for the first time allowed Yamal fishermen to harvest whitefish Coregonus muksun for aquaculture purposes, reports www.megafishnet.com.

From 5 June through to 3 July the fishermen harvested 186 whitefish producers in the river Ob. The fish was transported to Sobskiy hatchery where it will live in pools until autumn. After extraction of the roes the fish will be released to the wild.

In order to secure full load of the farm’s facilities they have to get 20-25 million fish eggs. The fish caught in the wild will provide ca.2.5 million of stocking material. Therefore, this year the hatchery is going to get some of the fry for stocking from its own broodstock.
