The ‘Namgis Land-Based Atlantic Salmon Recirculating System Pilot Project (the Project) is a commercial pilot facility that will demonstrate the technical and economic viability of producing Atlantic salmon for table food in a land-based, closed containment recirculating aquaculture system (RAS). This Project will serve as a catalyst for the development and growth of a new, land-based fish farming industry in BC to take advantage of a growing global market for sustainable seafood, reports www.megafishnet.com with reference to Aquaculture Association of Canada.

Located in 'Namgis First Nation Territory on Vancouver Island, Port McNeill is a community that enjoys a standard of living that is second to none. Temperate in climate year-round, Port McNeill is centrally located to the North Island and its coastal setting and proximity to rainforest makes it a haven for outdoor enthusiasts and adventurous families.

The Operations Manager (OM) will be responsible for a unique, state of the art $6 million RAS facility that is currently being designed and built to produce 315mt of farmed salmon annually. The position includes management of all aspects of the facility and production, as well as harvesting, processing, marketing and sales of product through outside facilities and resources. The OM will optimize production and maximize net returns while maintaining adherence to established standards for bio-security, fish health, the environment, health & safety, labour, and facilities management.

In subsequent phases of the Project, the OM will also oversee the development of ancillary businesses such as a hatchery as well as the implementation of innovative technologies such as an anaerobic digestion to produce energy and aquaponics to maximize value from waste products.

As the ideal candidate, you are dynamic, driven and detailed oriented, with an outstanding reputation as a professional commercial aquaculture manager. In addition, you bring:

  • Over five years of management experience ideally in a Recirculating Aquaculture System within the Atlantic salmon segment and a strong understanding of biological processes,
  • An ability to provide leadership and remain self-motivated while building and maintaining strong, trusting relationships with the team and all pertinent stakeholders both internally and externally and
• Outstanding communication and people management skills as well as the ability to keep employees focused on a vision.
