Icelandic fishermen changing grounds for poor herring search results

Faxi RE is now on its way to Reykjavík after three days of searching for herring in Breidafjördur. According to skipper Albert Sveinsson, there was nothing to be seen and they didn’t shoot the gear once, according to yesterday’s report of HB Grandi.

‘We heard that Álsey VE had seen a few marks the other day, and as we were alongside at Akranes, we decided to give it a try. We went all through the sounds off Stykkishólmur and the outer edges of Kolgrafafjördur and Grundafjördur before we decided to call it a day. Bjarni Ólafsson AK was alongside us and Hákon EA was there for a day as well,’ Albert Sveinsson said.

The call in Reykjavík is to switch over to a larger purse seine, after which Faxi will be steaming east to the Breidamerkur Deeps where there has been some reasonable herring fishing over the last few days. He said that Lundey NS is now on its way to Vopnafjördur to discharge a respectable amount of herring from the Breidamerkur Deeps.

It is not yet certain when Faxi will be steaming east as the weather forecast for the coming days with southerly and south-easterly storms predicted, and he told us that they won’t be leaving for the east coast until there is an outlook for some decent fishing weather.
