HB Grandi: Vopnafjordur sets production record

October 18, 2011 08:13

A total of 20,400 tonnes of herring and mackerel products were frozen at HB Grandi's Vopnafjördur factory during the season that came to an end last weekend. This is a 27% increase over last year's season, in spite of a 15% reduction in catches of herring and mackerel by the company's vessels compared to the previous season. All catches this year were landed for human consumption, reports www.megafishnet.com.

This is the result of the send-of-season figures from HB Grandi's pelagic division and according to departmental head Vilhjálmur Vilhjálmsson, 11,500 tonnes of mackerel products were frozen, along with 8900 tonnes of herring products. There was a significant increase in mackerel production compared to last year when only 4800 tonnes were frozen at Vopnafjördur. Production of Atlanto-Scandian herring was reduced by 2400 tonnes, due to this year's much lower herring quota. The overall reduction in herring quota was at least 7500 tonnes.

The overall catch this year was 37,200 tonnes of herring and mackerel combined, compared to 43,700 tonnes last year.
