HB Grandi: Not much blue whiting quota left

April 24, 2012 15:45
The blue whiting season is already coming to an end and the company's vessels now have only 2500 tonnes of their 12,600 tonne quota left to catch. This isn't a big quota, but is still a big improvement on last year's quota when HB Grandi's pelagic vessels had less than 1000 tonnes, reports www.megafishnet.com with reference to HB Grandi.

According to Vilhjálmur Vilhjálmsson, head of department at HB Grandi's pelagic division, Faxi RE and Lundey NS both docked at Vopnafjördur one night ago with full loads of blue whiting, and Ingunn AK arrived last night with full tanks. These landings bring the company's blue whiting catch to 10,000 tonnes since fishing began after Easter.

‘Faxi will be doing one more trip, and any blue whiting quota remaining after that will be held over to cover by-catches taken with this summer's herring and mackerel fishing, or be carried over to next year,' Vilhjálmur Vilhjálmsson said. This means that Ingunn and Lundey have an early summer break ahead of them as there is nothing to take over until the herring and mackerel fisheries begin at the end of June.

Lundey's fish is being discharged now and the ship is expected to be drydocked afterwards.
