HB Grandi: First mackerel and herring reach Vopnafjordur

July 4, 2012 09:27
The new season's first herring and mackerel landing of the year was expected at Vopnafjördur last night with Ingunn AK on the way with 400 tonnes on board. The fish were caught in three short hauls and is split roughly 50:50 herring and mackerel, reports www.megafishnet.com with reference to HB Grandi.

According to skipper Gudlaugur Jónsson, they started fishing on Sunday morning with a short haul on the Thors Bank that turned out to be almost clean mackerel, and the decision was taken to shift further north to find herring instead. The outcome was two short tows that were roughly half mackerel and half herring.

‘It looks good. We had this fish on small areas and the fish are a good size even though the fat content is only what can be expected at this time of year. The average weight of the mackerel is 450 grammes and the herring mostly between 300 and 350 grammes,' he said.

Only a few vessels were fishing in the same area as Ingunn, and Gudlaugur Jónsson said that most of those were fishing in shallower waters looking for mackerel. Yesterday there were pelagic vessels from Hornafjördur on those same grounds and Lundey NS had just arrived on fishing when we spoke to Gudlaugur Jónsson.
