Norwegian Sea catch and quota progress to November 2020

December 7, 2020 14:44

In November 2020 the Russian fleets continued targeting herring, blue whiting and black halibut in the Norwegian Sea, reports Megafishnet.com.

According to FishNet.ru, just like in October, herring was the main commercial species in the open part of the Norwegian Sea and in the EEZ of Norway, where 4 trawlers from Kaliningrad and 14 trawlers from the Northern Basin were operating. When the quotas were exhausted, the vessels left the grounds; and by the end of November only two Russian vessels continued fishing in the area.

In total, 22.8 thousand tonnes of fish (-19.8 thousand tonnes) were caught in November, mainly herring (94%), blue whiting by-catch was 6%.

From January to November 2020 Russian vessels caught about 64.2 thousand tonnes of herring (95.3% of the nation’s herring quota of 67,400 tonnes in the Norwegian EEZ and in the NEAFC regulatory area). In 2019, as per the same date, 75.1 thousand tonnes of herring were harvested, but the catch quota was higher, 75.8 thousand tonnes namely.

Blue whiting

On 22 November 2020 one vessel from the Northern Basin moved from the open part of the Norwegian Sea and resumed the fishery in the Faroese fishing zone. Five days later another trawler joined the first one. Therefore, during the last eight days of November the two harvesters altogether reported catches of 500 tonnes of blue whiting.

The total catch from the beginning of the year amounted to 98,000 tonnes (119.5% of Russia’s blue whiting quota of 82,000 tonnes in the Faroe Islands zone). In accordance with the order of the Federal Agency for Fishery No. 721 dated December 19, 2019, Russian vessels are allowed to cover in the Faroe fishing zone up to 25% (21,541 tonnes) of Russia’s blue whiting quota in the NEAFC regulatory area. For comparison, as per the same date in 2019, the Russian fleets harvested 94,900 tonnes of blue whiting.
