Norwegian pelagic fishing course in week 9

March 11, 2021 14:36

The NVG herring fishery went towards the end of last week. The blue whiting fields also had a calmer fishing pace this week.

NVG-Herring

Fiskebas had 195 tonnes from Haltenbanken on Wednesday last week. A couple of smaller catches were taken before Sander Andre came with 90 tonnes from Sklinnebanken. The herring was spilled.

So far this year, around 203,000 tonnes of NVG herring have been fished, which corresponds to 40% of the quota. At the same time last year, around 180,000 tonnes had been taken. The herring was out later this year, so much of the herring was spilled when it arrived in the fields outside Møre

Blue whiting

The result for the week was 19,250 tonnes distributed on 12-13 vessels. Friday was the best day with 6,800 tonnes registered. Around 2,500 tonnes were sold for consumption in Killybegs, while the rest went to fishmeal / oil factories in Norway, Denmark and Ireland.

As of now, there are around 22 boats on the field. They have been divided into two groups, one located at 50.3 degrees north of the border with the EU zone and the other 150 nm further north. Many vessels are reported in the field, also foreign, with long towing, and a * queuing scheme * to get started with trawling.

So far, around 70,000 tonnes or just over a third of the blue whiting quota has been taken. The weather in the area has been good, but more wind has been reported during the week.

Horse mackerel

200 tonnes of horse mackerel have been reported in the past week, with catches from Boknafjorden in the south, some from Bjørnefjorden and catches from the area outside Askvoll.

Norges Sildesalgslag

Norges Sildesalgslag (Norwegian Fishermen’s Sales Organization for Pelagic Fish) is a sales organization, owned and operated by fishermen (a ‘coop’), selling fish at a first-hand basis from fishermen to buyers - for further sales/export.

The fish being sold through Norges Sildesalgslag, is called pelagic species, and represent the types of fish migrating freely in open seas. Pelagic species include herring, mackerel, capelin, sprat etc. Pelagic species are mainly used for direct human consumption purposes, but some species, are also being used as raw material for fish oil and fish meal production, an ingredient used in fodder for fish farming.
