Norwegian pelagic fishing course in week 12

March 31, 2021 15:44

From 25 different boats, 38,600 tonnes of blue whiting were reported last week, which is the second best week of the winter. Best day was Monday with 13,100 hours in the record. This week's quantity is divided from 20 boats in blue whiting trawls and 5 boats from pelagic trawls / North Sea trawls.

All catches, except for a few small catches from the Norwegian zone, are taken in the EU zone, where fishing has taken place from the north of the Porcuepine bank and further in the northeast to close to the border between the EU and the UK. Essentially, this is fishing in what is described as the "Irish box". One area Norwegian blue whiting boats have not had access to in recent decades. This was changed when an agreement was put in place between Norway and the EU almost two weeks ago.

The fishing in the last week has been uneven, where at times one has had long tows to get up in the "bag", while for those who have hit well, one has filled up, with a trawl haul of over 1,000 t in a relatively short time. During the weekend, bad weather has hampered fishing for periods.

175,000 tonnes of the year have now been fished with a quota of just under 246,000 tonnes. For pelagic / North Sea trawls, most have a quota left. In contrast to blue whiting trawls, they have the opportunity to fish for blue whiting south of the N 62⁰ in the Norwegian zone of the North Sea.

With the above, we expect significantly lower weekly quantities in the future.

Horse mackerel

On the horse mackerel along the coast of Western Norway, we have only had four registrations with just under 50 tonnes in total. The sizes of the horse mackerel are in the range 420- 450 g.
