Catch and quota progress in Northeast/Northwest Atlantic and Central East Atlantic in May 2021

In May 2021 Russian trawlers were targeting various species at East and West Greenland, NAFO regulatory area and in the Mauritanian EEZ, as well as in South Pacific area, reports Megafishnet.com.

Irminger Sea

Six trawlers coming from Kaliningrad and six from Murmansk had a success on the redfish grounds in the Irminger Sea. The fishery conditions were fairly good through the month. The total catch amounted to 11,100 tonnes. The harvest from the beginning of the year totalled 11,400 tonnes against the Russian quota of 24,900 tonnes. Last year as per 31 May the redfish catch amounted to 6,600 tonnes.

Northwest Atlantic (NAFO Regulatory Area)

According to Fishnet.ru, three trawlers coming from Murmansk-led North Fisheries were operating in the NAFO Regulatory Area. The fishermen were targeting redfish, halibut, cod, hake and skates. The total catch through the month amounted to 1,100 tonnes (+700 tonnes), of which halibut and redfish accounted for 39%, hake – 12%, cod – 7%, flounder – 1% and grenadier – 1%.

Mauritania

In the Mauritanian EEZ, two trawlers coming from Kaliningrad, two from Russia’s North Fisheries and three from the Russian Far East were engaged in the pelagic trawl fishery. The fishery situation in the course of the month was unstable, a certain improvement was noticed in the end of the month.

The Russian catches in the Mauritanian waters in March 2021 amounted to 6,800 tonnes (+1,300 tonnes YOY), of which horse mackerel accounted for 73%, sardine – 9%, mackerel – 4% and bycatch of other fish species - 14%.

Southeast Pacific

After a long search, RTMKS Admiral Shabalin owned by Murmansk-based PAO MTF found concentrated schools and resumed fishing. The conditions were fairly good and on 24 May 2021 the vessel headed for the port for landing. Her catches in May amounted to 2,700 tonnes, of which horse mackerel accounted for 51%, Cape bonnetmouth– 42%, mackerel – 4% and alfonsino -3%.
