MSC certificate reconfirmed for Arkhangelsk Trawl Fleet

January 10, 2021 23:53

JSC Arkhangelsk Trawl Fleet (ATF) has successfully passed repeated certification of cod and haddock fishery to MSC standards for another five-year term, reports Megafishnet.com.

The fishery’s assessment has been conducted by an independent certification company.

ATF ranks among the largest cod and haddock quota holders in the North Fisheries Basin with the fishery carried out in the Barents and Norwegian Seas including the Russian and Norwegian EEZs as well as the international waters. In 2019 the company’s catch exceeded 112 thousand metric tons.

According to ATF Executive Director Sergey Nesvetov quoted by Fishnews, since the first Russian companies began certifying fisheries for compliance with the MSC criteria, the fishermen’s outlook has substantially changed in favor of greater sustainability.

A lot of work has been done including  vulnerable by-catch identification and recording,   testing of the ideas for changes in fishing gear design and  signature of an agreement on measures to protect vulnerable habitats in the Barents Sea.
