Esja walk attracts a crowd

Around 150 people took part in HB Grandi’s Esja walk last weekend. The company’s staff were invited to take part and coaches were laid on to bring them from locations in Akranes and from Norðurgarður in Reykjavík. There are hopes that the event can be repeated, as the day was seen to be a highly successful outing, reports www.megafishnet.com with reference to the company.

According to Kristín Helga Waage Knútsdóttir, PA to HB Grandi’s CEO, the idea of an Esja walk came from the company’s technical director Gísli Sigmarsson, following a lecture on health improvement delivered to staff in March, and he and Kristín Helga organised the event together.

‘The weather could hardly have been better, sunshine and still weather, with a fantastic view. We had the choice of two routes under the guidance of staff from the Esjustofa hiking centre. Those who are less used to mountain trails could take the forest route to Mógilsá. There were people with small children who chose this option. For the more ambitious, there was the Thverfellshorn route and a large group went that way. Everyone was supplied with a snack to take with them to eat on the way, as well as an energy drink and a bottle of water,’ Kristín Helga said, commenting that once the climbers had returned, there were grilled sausages, spelt buns and oat cakes on offer at the Esjustofa hiking centre. The refreshments were washed down with fruit juice and water, to the sound of an accordion accompaniment.

‘Everyone I spoke to was delighted with the way the day had turned out and told us that it had been a great idea,’ said Kristín Helga Waage Knútsdóttir.
