An Icelandic manufacturer of fish processing and freezing equipment for small fishing boats is scrutinizing localization of machinery assembly in Leningrad Oblast surrounding Saint Petersburg, according to CEO of Leningrad Oblast Centre for Industry Development Andrey Pivinskiy.

At the current stage of project the sides are looking into two possible ways of the project’s implementation: either to build own facility for manufacture of fish processing equipment inside the region with a product development department to be opened or to set up such production at the existing premises of one of the region’s processing companies.

The project will be finalized in 2019. Localization of the production cycle will take at least two years. The company’s name and total investments into the project remain undisclosed. However, it is reported that the Icelandic company is engaged in design and production of onboard fish processing and freezing equipment for small fishing vessels, as well as design of such vessels. On the Russian market it sees strong potential in small vessels.

According to Mr.Pivinsky, nowadays the bulk of subassemblies for shipbuilding in Russia are made abroad and the Centre aims at raising the share of domestic production. The above mentioned project is in line with such strategy.

By the way, about a year ago an Icelandic investor partnered with a Russian counterpart to open Nautic Rus vessel design bureau in St-Petersburg and the business is already going at full swing.
