July 19, 2011 10:47

State-of- the art complex for sturgeon restocking and black caviar production is going to be built in the Russian province of Astrakhan near the Caspian Sea, according to the Russian Fish Insider Report published by http://www.megafishnet.com/

The information made public by the regional government puts the value of the project at RUR 2.8 billion or ca. $100 million at the current rate of exchange. The facility is to be fully phased in during the course six years from 2011-2017.

To help realize the ambitious plans the Regional Investment Council has granted certain tax exemptions to the company behind the project - OOO National Fish Breeding Technologies (Natsionalnye Rybovodnye Technologii).

The black caviar to be produced will profit from the well-known ASTRAKHAN brand but, according to critics, the facility could operate anywhere as it will farm the more productive Siberian sturgeon in a land-based recirculation aquaculture system.
