Aquaculture production in Russia showing positive progress in 2025
In the first half of 2025 Russia’s aquaculture production increased by 3.8% to 217.6 thousand metric tons year-on-year.
The above figure includes 65.1 thousand MT of carp (+4.7%), 75.6 thousand MT of other than finfish seafood (oysters, mussels, scallops and other mollusks and echinoderms, as well as algae) (+10.5%) and 64.9 thousand tonnes of salmon. The leading contributors are Karelia, Vladivostok-led Primorye and Krasnodar Territories, Murmansk, Astrakhan, Rostov and Leningrad regions.
The growth in aquaculture production is due to factors such as increased demand, especially in tourist regions, government support, as well as a growing number of business entities interested in working in this sector.
According to the macro forecast of the Ministry of Economic Development, reviewed at a government meeting in September, the production of aquaculture products this year will reach 420 thousand metric tons, which is 10.4% more than in 2024. The growth rate may reach 2.9% in 2026, 10.9% in 2027, and 9.8% in 2028. In 2028, the indicator will increase by 38.2% compared to 2024. As reported, in 2024, the Russian Federation recorder a 5.5% decline in aquaculture production to 380 thousand MT from 402 thousand tonnes in 2023.
