10-year quota shares on forthcoming agenda

Distribution of new 10-year quota shares shall be carried out well before the end of the year 2008 so that the Russian fishermen could have time to prepare for the fishing operations in 2009, head of Russia's State Fisheries Committee told chairman of the Fishery Industry Coordination Council Vyacheslav Zilanov as reported by according to B-Port.

More specifically, the Commission in charge of distribution of quota shares between the Russian fishing companies shall complete its work by 10 August.

Krainy has also informed Zilanov about the new amendments to the Federal Law on Fisheries and Conservation of Aquatic Biological Resources which have been already formulated on the basis of the fishermen's proposals. As per early March 2008, those amendments have been forwarded for consideration by specialists and senators of the Federation Council. They are to be introduced to the State Duma (Lower House) until the end of the winter-autumn session.

The fishery officials have also discussed possible improvement of providing the Russian fishing vessels with longterm and shortterm fishery forecasts directly on the grounds. Towards that end, the men have looked into possible revival of the Basins' fishery prospecting and spotting services. Andrey Krainy has asked Vyacheslav Zilanov to prepare the corresponding proposals.
