In the recent years Russian companies based in the Far East Fishery Basin have been boosting production of farmed Japanese sea cucumber. As a result, sea cucumber exports to the Asian Pacific countries jumped six-fold in value terms, reports www.megafishnet.com.
According to the Administration of Vladivostok-led Primorskiy Krai, in 2018 the region’s aquafarmers raised production by 38% to 13,200 tonnes, including 2,400 tonnes of sea cucumber.
Russian sea cucumber has been shipped to China, Japan and South Korea where it is popular as a healthy product with unique healing properties. In the meantime, inside Russia the deli has not enjoyed a good demand so far.
In 2018 Russian farmers exported sea cucumber in live, frozen and salted and dried form. In volume terms, the nation’s exports amounted to 19.9 metric tons worth USD2.6 million. In 2016 and 2017 the results were much lower – 7.8 tonnes (USD446,000) and 10.1 tonnes (USD693,000) correspondingly.
The biggest export market for Russian sea cucumber is China followed by Japan and South Korea.
